Wildfire Season

Wildfire Danger

Beginning in March of 2006 we had a string of 18 months in a row of below average precipitation before September of 2007 broke the trend. In 2007 the Cumberland Dispatch Group of the WI DNR (covers all of Washburn, Burnett and parts of Barron and Polk counties) responded to 147 wildfires that burned 147 acres. That's only one acre burned per fire occurrence, which is quite an accomplishment considering the extreme dryness and long fire season. Except for January and December, we had fires in every month of the year in 2007, something that does not happen very often and is an indicator of the extreme drought we are experiencing.

We are not out of the woods yet however; while we did catch up with the annual average by the end of 2007, over the last 5 years (2003 – 2007) precipitation records for Spooner are nearly 18 inches below average precipitation. The snow or rain we get this March and April will dictate weather or not the drought continues as well as the severity of the spring fire season 2008.
